Learn the skills for birding by sight and song as we look for numerous bird species, including bobolinks, bald eagles, vireos, and wood warblers.

We offer two different tours, a moderate tour and an intermediate tour. Please see descriptions below to know which tour is appropriate for you. Both tours welcome experienced birders and those new to the hobby and offer views of the Main House. All tours leave from The Mount’s Stable promptly at 8:00 am. Pre-registration is required, tours are limited to 20. To register click HERE or go to www.massaudubon.org/programs.

  • Moderate – This is a leisurely-paced walk leaving from the historic Stable through the woodlands and marsh.
  • Intermediate – This is a vigorously-paced walk through rocky and uneven terrain down to Edith Wharton Park and Laurel Lake. We walk back to the Stable through woodlands and marshes.

Binoculars and bird books will be provided by Mass Audubon but feel free to bring your own. Proper hiking attire and footwear, bug spray, and water bottles are highly recommended. Please note that our bird walks are not suitable for wheelchairs and includes steep and uneven terrain.

There will be no tours on August 6, August, 13, and August 20.

Dale Abrams is the Education and Volunteer Coordinator for Mass Audubon’s Berkshire Wildlife Sanctuaries. He is a life-long naturalist, birder, and wildlife tracker who has studied ecosystems from West Coast to the Rocky Mountains, and New England, where he has lived in the Berkshires for the past 17 years.

Drew Johnson is a naturalist for Mass Audubon as well as a writer and teacher with work in Harper’s, New England Review, Los Angeles Review of Books, The Literary Review, Literary Hub, and elsewhere. He is an experienced birder who leads guided hikes and nature walks in the Berkshires and the Hilltowns.

Becky Cushing is the Director of Mass Audubon’s Berkshire Wildlife Sanctuaries and has guided nature and outdoor programs throughout New England since 2003. Her background is in conservation biology, with an MS in Plant Biology from UVM’s Field Naturalist Program and she is a 2012 Switzer Fellow.
