American Landscapes Documentary & Garden Tour

Member Exclusive Event!

“Decidedly, I’m a better landscape gardener than novelist, and this place, every line of which is my own work, far surpasses The House of Mirth.” – Edith Wharton in a letter to Morton Fullerton, 1911

Join us for a screening of Beatrix Farrand’s American Landscapes, a new documentary which follows Garden designer Lynden B. Miller as she recounts the remarkable life and career of America’s first female landscape architect Beatrix Farrand (who was also Edith Wharton’s niece).

The documentary (runtime 60 minutes) explores the remarkable life and career of America’s first female landscape architect — Beatrix Farrand. Written and directed by Stephen Ives and co-produced and co-written by his wife, Anne Cleves Symmes, the movie interweaves the story of Lynden B. Miller and her pioneering mentor as she journeys to iconic Farrand gardens, engaging designers, scholars and horticulturists in a spirited dialogue about the meaning and importance of this ground-breaking early 20th-century woman.
